Google Keep import
Bring your Keep notes across
Export from Google Takeout, then preview every note before it is imported. Nothing is written to your account until you choose where the notes should go and confirm the preview.
Sign in before choosing files. The import writes into an account, so the picker stays closed until you sign in or create one. Your Takeout files are not read before that, and the preview is never written to browser storage.
Choose the Takeout ZIP as it downloaded, the JSON files from the Keep folder, or both. The ZIP is opened in this browser: only the Keep folder and the pictures the notes reference are unpacked, and nothing is uploaded.
Already unzipped? Choose the Keep folder to pair each note with the pictures sitting beside it.
Preview
This account has no Vault yet. Sign in first, then set up your Vault.
The import run finished. Open the destination to check the notes, then keep the original Takeout archive until you are sure nothing is missing.
Getting the export
Open Google Takeout, select Keep, and download the archive. You can hand the ZIP to the picker above without unzipping it, or unzip it and choose the JSON files and pictures yourself. A full Takeout archive is fine: only the Keep folder is read.
What carries over
Titles, body text, checklists, labels, pin state, and archive state carry over. Notes maps Keep colours to its smaller colour set and uses the date imported. Vault keeps the source timestamps as import details. A picture a note references is attached to that note when the file is in your selection, downscaled and re-encoded so camera and location metadata does not travel with it.
What stays in Takeout
Audio, PDFs, and other attachments that are not pictures stay in your archive, because a note only holds pictures. A referenced picture that is missing from the selection, or that shares its file name with another file, is reported on that note instead of being guessed at. Notes hold up to three pictures each.
What is flattened or skipped
Nested checklist items are appended to their list at a single level, and the note reports how many moved. Trashed notes are skipped, and a note that appears twice in one selection is imported once. Annotations, collaborators, and audio are reported in the preview.
Choosing Notes or Vault
Notes is the everyday notebook, encrypted on our server, so the service can decrypt it. Vault is optional and encrypts in this browser before upload, which is why it needs an unlock first. Notes caps a title at 200 characters, a note at 20,000 characters, and a checklist at 200 items; anything larger is reported in the preview and can be imported to Vault instead.
