Where your key lives
Creating a vault generates a random encryption key and a recovery secret. The secret wraps the key; the wrapped key is stored on the server, and the unwrapped key exists only in the browser tab you unlocked.
When the tab closes, the key is gone from memory. The next visit asks for the recovery secret again unless you keep the vault open.
What that means in practice
- The service cannot read your notes, even during support
- A stolen database copy holds sealed payloads only
- Losing the recovery secret means losing the notes
- Export produces a file you can read later
Can I use notes without an account?
The paste, image, and template tools work signed out. Notes need an account because they are stored and synced, and the vault key has to belong to something.
Does signing in with Google change the encryption?
No. Google and GitHub sign-in replace the password step only. They are never used as the encryption key, and they cannot unlock a vault on their own.
Can I import from Google Keep?
Yes. Export from Takeout, preview the JSON files on the import page, then confirm. Trashed notes are skipped and attachments are listed as references.
What if I stop using the service?
Download an export of everything in your account, then delete the account. Deleting an account removes the stored payloads, and the exported file keeps working offline.
