Guide

Import your Google Keep notes

Google Keep exports as a Takeout archive of JSON files, one per note. The import tool reads those files in your browser, shows what will be carried over, and writes nothing until you confirm the preview. Confirmed notes are encrypted in the browser and written into your vault.

Get the export

  1. Open Google Takeout and sign in to the Google account that holds the notes.
  2. Deselect the other products and select Keep.
  3. Start the export and wait for Google to prepare the archive. Large accounts can take hours.
  4. Download the ZIP file and unzip it on your device.
  5. Open the Takeout folder, then the Keep folder inside it. Each note is a JSON file, and images or audio from your notes sit beside those files in the same folder.

Choose the files

The picker accepts several JSON files at once, but there is no folder upload. Select the note files you want from the Keep folder, or select all of them.

The files are read in your browser and the preview is built locally. Nothing is sent anywhere at this point.

Read the preview

The summary reports how many notes were found, how many attachment references they carry, how many limitations were reported, and whether any file could not be read.

Each note is listed with its title and either a ready state or the limitations that apply to it. Review that list before you continue.

What carries over

Titles, body text, checklists, labels, colours, pin state, archive state, and the original timestamps are imported into your vault.

What is left behind

  • Attachments. The note JSON records file names and paths only, so the import leaves attachments out. The files themselves may still be inside the Takeout archive, where you can keep them for later.
  • Nested checklist items. They are flattened into the list they belong to.
  • Annotations, collaborators, and audio notes. These are reported in the preview and skipped.
  • Trashed notes. They are skipped when the import runs.

Run the import

Importing needs an account with an unlocked vault, because each note is encrypted in the browser before it is stored, and the destination is your vault. Tick the confirmation box, choose Import notes, and the notes appear in the vault.

Limits to keep in mind

  • The Takeout ZIP must be unzipped and the JSON files chosen by hand. The picker does not accept the archive itself.
  • Attachments are not imported. The note JSON records file names only, and image or audio files in the archive are left where they are.
  • Nested list items are flattened, and annotations, collaborators, and audio are skipped.
  • Importing writes into the vault, so it requires an account and an unlocked vault.

Questions

Can I upload the Takeout ZIP directly?

No. Unzip it first, then select the JSON files from the Keep folder inside the archive.

Where do the notes land after the import?

In your vault. Each note is encrypted in the browser before it is stored, and the vault key never leaves the browser.

Are my Keep photos and audio imported?

No. The note JSON lists the file names, but attachments are not read or uploaded. Keep the Takeout folder if you want those files, because the import does not move them.

What happens to notes in the Keep trash?

They are skipped. Notes still in the Keep trash are not imported.

Do I need an account?

The preview works without one, but importing writes encrypted notes into your vault, so sign in and unlock the vault first.
