Your runs can lead to your front door
Shared walking, running and cycling routes usually start and end at home or work. GPX files also carry the exact time of every point, your device and app, and sometimes heart rate and other sensor data. Cleaning a photo's metadata doesn't touch any of this.
What the cleaner does
- Hides the start and end by removing every point within the distance you choose.
- Hides other areas you click on, such as your office or a friend's house. The route is split there, so no line is drawn across the gap.
- Removes times, so nobody can tell when you were where, or when you're usually out.
- Removes names, app and device details, heart rate, cadence and other sensor data, and optionally elevation and saved places.
How to export a GPX file
Example: if a walk leaves home and passes home again later, remove every point inside the home area. The cleaned file keeps separate route sections on either side of each gap. Check the preview and the app you import it into, since that app controls how it draws separate sections.
For photos from the same trip, use photo metadata removal to remove stored location details. Neither tool hides landmarks visible in a picture.
Strava: open the activity → ⋯ → Export GPX. Garmin Connect: activity → gear icon → Export to GPX. Komoot: tour → ⋯ → Download GPX.
Questions
Is my route uploaded?
No. It's read and drawn in your browser. There's no map in the background because loading map tiles would tell a map company where your route is.
Does this change my Strava privacy zones?
No. It makes a cleaned copy of the file for sharing or uploading elsewhere. Set privacy zones in each app as well.
