What a document says about you
Office files and PDFs carry details you never typed into the page: the author's name, the company the software is registered to, who saved it last, how long it was edited, the printer it was sent to, and sometimes a folder path from the author's computer. Comments and tracked changes stay inside the file even when they're hidden from view, with the reviewer's name next to each one.
What the cleaner removes
- Word, Excel and PowerPoint: author, last saved by, company, manager, dates, editing time, custom properties, the preview picture, printer settings, template path, revision IDs and the folder an Excel file was saved from. Strict and Transitional Word files are supported. Comments are removed and tracked changes accepted (both optional). Reviewer names left in comments or changes are replaced with "Author".
- OpenDocument (LibreOffice): the same details from
meta.xml, the preview picture, printer settings, comments and tracked changes. - PDF: title, author, subject, keywords, the app that made it, dates, the hidden XMP copy of those details, app-private editing data, scripts, action chains and earlier saved versions. Comments and highlights are removed (optional). Ordinary HTTP and HTTPS links are kept; other actions are removed. Pages are copied into a new PDF without document bookmarks. Attachments are flagged for review; attachments carried by kept annotations may remain.
Questions
Before sending a contract: clean the document, reopen the downloaded copy, and check its tables, comments and tracked changes. This removes file metadata; names and addresses written in the contract remain part of the document.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Files are opened and rebuilt in your browser. Nothing is sent to our server.
Does it change what's in the document?
Accepting tracked changes makes suggested insertions normal text and removes suggested deletions. Turn that option off to keep the changes, with reviewers' names replaced. PDF pages keep their visual content, but scripts, action chains and document bookmarks are removed. Check the clean copy before sharing it.
Can it clean old .doc, .xls or .ppt files?
No. Open them in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, save them in the newer format, then clean them here.
What about hidden text, white text or text under images?
Those are part of the content, so this tool keeps them. To remove something from a PDF for good, use PDF redaction.
