How to make a strong password
Length matters more than complexity. A random 16-character password using letters, numbers and symbols would take longer than the age of the universe to guess by brute force. A passphrase of five random words is nearly as strong and much easier to type on a phone.
How this generator works
- Your browser draws random numbers from the operating system's secure random source.
- Each character is picked from the sets you choose, using rejection sampling so no character is more likely than another.
- The result appears only on this page. It isn't logged, stored or sent anywhere.
Questions
Is it safe to generate a password online?
It is when the password is made in your browser and never leaves it, as here. Disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
Password or passphrase?
Use random passwords for accounts kept in a password manager. Use a passphrase for the few things you type from memory, like your computer login or your vault password.
How long should a password be?
At least 16 characters for random passwords, or five words for passphrases. Longer is better when the site allows it.
