Share data without sharing people
Exports from shops, CRMs and apps are full of names, emails, phone numbers and customer IDs. Before you send sample data to a developer, a colleague or a consultant, remove the columns they don't need and replace the rest with stand-ins.
What each action does
- Replace consistently: every value becomes a stand-in such as
user0007@example.comorPerson 0007. The same original always gets the same stand-in, so totals, joins and duplicates still work. - Hash (keyed): turns IDs into short codes using a random key that's thrown away, so they can't be reversed or matched with another file.
- Mask: keeps the last few characters, like
••••••1234. - Year only: turns a birth date into a year.
- Remove column and Blank do what they say.
Questions
Is the file uploaded?
No. It's read and cleaned in your browser.
Is the result anonymous?
Not necessarily. Columns you keep, like age, town and job title together, can still identify someone. Keep only what the other person really needs.
Does it work with Excel files?
Save the sheet as CSV in Excel first (File → Save As → CSV UTF-8), then open it here.
