Tags and audio are separate
MP3 ID3 tags can hold artist names, titles, comments, dates and cover artwork. This cleaner removes supported tags from the beginning and end of a validated MP3 stream. It keeps the audio frames byte for byte, without decoding or re-encoding them.
What stays in the recording
Encoder details inside MPEG audio frames remain, as do voices, lyrics and other identifying sounds. Removing tags does not prevent audio fingerprinting or remove a watermark. Renaming the downloaded file may also be necessary before sharing it.
Files that need another editor
The parser supports ID3v1 and simple ID3v2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 tags around standard MPEG Layer III frames. It rejects extended or unsynchronised tags, free-format audio, APE tags, trailing ID3v2 and unknown trailing data. An unsupported file produces an error instead of a partial cleaned copy. The 16 MiB file stays in this browser.
