Choose what to include in a contact card

You might want to share a work number without sharing a home address or birthday. A saved contact card can include all of those, plus photos and private notes. Here's how to make a smaller card or check one you've already exported.

1. Choose the details this person needs

A name and one way to get in touch may be enough. Add a company or website if it helps. If it's someone else's contact card, check that they're happy for you to pass it on. The person who receives a card can save it or forward it.

2. Make a fresh card if that's easier

Open Contact card builder. Enter a Display name, then fill in only the Email, Phone, Company or Website fields you need. Choose Prepare contact card and read the preview. It makes the contact file on your device without importing your address book or sending the details to a contact service.

3. Check an existing contact file

If you already have a .vcf file, open it in Contact card cleaner. A .vcf stores contact details and can contain more than one person, so look through them all. Name and work only is a starting point, but it can keep a company, role, website and anything marked as work. Untick the details you don't want to send.

4. Look for extras

Check old numbers, home addresses, birthdays, photos and notes. Look at unfamiliar fields too. A website address may include a private account link. Use Keep all only after you've checked what it will include.

5. Open the downloaded card

Download the prepared card, or choose Download .vcf in the cleaner. Read it as text or preview it in a contact app before adding it to your main address book. Check phone country codes and email spelling. If you make a QR code from the card, anyone who scans or photographs it can read the details.

Good to know

Contact files aren't encrypted. Removing a detail from this copy won't change your address book or take it back from people you've already sent it to. Different contact apps may show the same fields differently.
